2015 Program

2015 Fellow Bios

Mariko Kanai (Columbia University, Class of 2017)

Mariko Kanai is a second-year undergraduate student at Columbia, studying Biology and possibly concentrating in Human Rights. During her previous residency in Tokyo, she worked on a Japanese NGO’s Fukushima Project as an intern and created a program at her high school to provide vegetables to Minamisoma families in temporary housing. At Columbia, she is involved in the Consortium for Japan Relief and has recently developed a personal interest in how to approach and overcome adversity. Through this program she hopes to gain exposure to disaster medicine and the current status of relief efforts, strengthen our relationship with the people of Fukushima and FMU, and engage the community in a continuous discussion on issues surrounding March 11th.
